Our Schools

We measure our success in actual lives changed. These stories are a testament to the difference that communities can make when we come together to create lasting change. Shiva Charity are committed to providing safe, comfortable and well equipped schools to give the children of Nepal the best possible future

Dipshikha School

Located on a hillside south of Banepa near the village of Rabi Opi, Dipshikha school was unfortunately destroyed by earthquakes in 2015, Shiva Charity set up temporary structures created with tents reinforced with salvaged materials from the destroyed buildings.

Through our fundraising activities Shiva Charity where able to purchase a brick laying machine, enabling the team on the ground to create bricks by hand to build new, more solid building to replace the temporary ones set up after the earthquake.

We recently finished the construction of a new toilet block, with access to fresh, clean water improving the sanitation and health of the pupils and staff.

Still an ongoing project any support or fundraising will help towards the construction of further buildings, purchasing of computers and resources for the school and pay for the children's education.

Ginette Harrison School

Ginette was a world famous high altitude mountaineer. She completed  the "Seven Summits" and was the first woman to climb Kangchenjunga. Sadly, she died in an avalanche whilst  climbing Dhaulagiri in 1999. Her friends and family wanted to set up a lasting memorial in her name. and asked SHIVA Charity to help. The Ginette Harrison School was founded in 2001 in a poor farming area in the Rabi -Opi Valley, near Banepa. However, after four years, under pressure from Maoist terrorists (who had threatened to blow up the building), a new and bigger school was built nearby, with more classroom space, and better equipment and facilities for the students and staff.

Fundraising for the school has been ongoing. Every year the "Wilderness Lectures" in Bristol have a specific evening when the Ginette Harrison Memorial Lecture raises money for the school. "Mountain Kingdoms Ltd",  the trekking company, receives  from its clients to support the school, and other generous donations, including those from Barcan + Kirby (solicitors), and Hill International, have helped to improve the school even further. In 2014 the school was renovated, replastered and painted, with the upper storey completed, and a new roof, windows and doors fitted.donations

Sanga School

Sanga English Medium Secondary School is a popular school in Banepa. SHIVA Charity has helped its development with teachers' resources training, music lessons, providing  guitars, keyboards and music booklets.

The educational system in Nepal has plenty of room for improvement. Teachers are often untrained and there are a lack of resources and funding.  Music, drama, and art are not on the curriculum. Sports facilities are rarely adequate. Core curriculum subjects are taught mostly by copying from the board and the emphasis is on gaining good marks for the yearly exams. Boys are considered more important than girls, both at school and at home.  Cheating at the Exam Centres is a big problem that the government is trying to tackle. SHIVA Charity has tried with its resources training and with its own printed booklets, to address some of these problems. We have insisted that Sanga School has no physical punishment, and we have given the teachers regular training in using resources and making lessons more enjoyable, and child-centred. It has been an uphill struggle but very rewarding.

Harold Whiting School

Harold Whiting School is sponsored by David Whiting in memory of his father. The school was built in 2007, and replaced an old, unsafe building called Dhruba Tara School, in Khawa, Kavre District. The former building was totally destroyed in the earthquake of 2015.

Yadab, who has been the principal of the school for more than 12 years, was at home when the earthquake struck, and broke his arm while saving his child.

In the last year with the help of the R.A.O.B we were able to repaint the school and this year we plan to replace the old furniture.
